What is hunner lesions?

Hunner lesions, also called interstitial cystitis (IC) lesions, are a type of bladder inflammation that can cause pain, pressure, and discomfort in the pelvic area. These lesions are named after Guy LeRoy Hunner, who first described them in 1915.

Hunner lesions are characterized by patches of inflamed tissue on the surface of the bladder wall. They can cause bleeding, scarring, and thickening of the bladder tissue. People with interstitial cystitis often experience pain with urination and an urgent need to urinate frequently throughout the day and night.

Hunner lesions are often difficult to diagnose because their symptoms often resemble those of other bladder conditions. If left untreated, they can lead to further bladder damage. Treatment for Hunner lesions may involve medication to reduce inflammation or surgery to remove the damaged tissue. Behavioral and dietary changes, such as limiting caffeine and alcohol intake and practicing relaxation techniques, can also help manage symptoms.
